In the Terminal app on your Mac, enter the complete pathname of the tool’s executable file, followed by any needed arguments, then press Return. If a command is located in one of the shell’s known folders, you can omit path information when entering the command name. Launchctl unload / Library / LaunchAgents / local.restart.plist. Loading a job puts it into the launchd queue, and the job will run at the time specified in its launch conditions. If you want to run a script immediately no matter what, you should use the “start” command: launchctl start local.restart.

Installing G on a Mac. This section is intended to get you quickly started with C programming on your Mac. We'll be installing GCC 4.8.1 and GDB through a tool called Homebrew. If you want an additional guide on all of the following steps (except for installing GCC), the one by Moncef Belyamani is quite helpful. When you follow it, ignore. Terminal commands on macOS aren’t difficult to run. The only difficult or inconvenient part is where you have to type the command out. If you often have to run a Terminal command and you’re tired of having to type it out over and over again, it’s a good idea to just save it as a script and run it instead.

This tutorial shows how to create and run a .NET Core console application using Visual Studio for Mac.

Prerequisites

  • Visual Studio for Mac version 8.6 or later. Select the option to install .NET Core. Installing Xamarin is optional for .NET Core development. For more information, see the following resources:

Create the app

Create a .NET Core console app project named 'HelloWorld'.

  1. Start Visual Studio for Mac.

  2. Select New in the start window.

  3. In the New Project dialog, select App under the Web and Console node. Select the Console Application template, and select Next.

  4. In the Target Framework drop-down of the Configure your new Console Application dialog, select .NET Core 3.1, and select Next.

  5. Type 'HelloWorld' for the Project Name, and select Create.

The template creates a simple 'Hello World' application. It calls the Console.WriteLine(String) method to display 'Hello World!' in the terminal window.

The template code defines a class, Program, with a single method, Main, that takes a String array as an argument:

Main is the application entry point, the method that's called automatically by the runtime when it launches the application. Any command-line arguments supplied when the application is launched are available in the args array.

Run the app

  1. Press (option+command+enter) to run the app without debugging.

  2. Close the Terminal window.

Enhance the app

Enhance the application to prompt the user for their name and display it along with the date and time.

  1. In Program.cs, replace the contents of the Main method, which is the line that calls Console.WriteLine, with the following code:

    This code displays a prompt in the console window and waits until the user enters a string followed by the enter key. It stores this string in a variable named name. It also retrieves the value of the DateTime.Now property, which contains the current local time, and assigns it to a variable named date. And it displays these values in the console window. Finally, it displays a prompt in the console window and calls the Console.ReadKey(Boolean) method to wait for user input.

    The n represents a newline character.

    The dollar sign ($) in front of a string lets you put expressions such as variable names in curly braces in the string. The expression value is inserted into the string in place of the expression. This syntax is referred to as interpolated strings.

  2. Press (option+command+enter) to run the app.

  3. Respond to the prompt by entering a name and pressing enter.

  4. Close the terminal.

To edit a plain text file in Terminal, you can use a command-line text editor.

For general-purpose work, it’s easiest to use one of the text editors included with macOS. If you want to use a graphical text editor, use TextEdit (in Launchpad). Otherwise, use one of the command-line editors included with macOS:

Nano nano is a simple command-line editor. It’s a good introduction to using a command-line editor because it includes easy-to-follow on-screen help. See the nano man page.

Vim vim is a vi-compatible text editor. It has many powerful enhancements for moving around, searching, and editing documents. Basic editing is simple to learn, and there’s additional functionality to explore. You can access most of the functionality by using keystroke combinations that trigger certain behavior. vim, or the editor it’s modeled after, vi, is found in most UNIX-based operating systems. If you’re new to using the command line and don’t anticipate using it much for editing, nano is probably your best choice. If you expect to spend a lot of time using the command-line environment, it’s probably worth learning vim. They have very different design philosophies, so spend some time with each of them to determine which works best for you.

  • In the Terminal app on your Mac, invoke a command-line editor by typing the name of the editor, followed by a space and then the name of the file you want to open. If you want to create a new file, type the editor name, followed by a space and the pathname of the file.

    Here’s an example of using nano to open a new file named “myFile.conf” in your Documents folder:
