The Quik Desktop App is the easiest way to get your footage off your camera, so you can check out your shots, make awesome videos, and share those moments wi. As the best facilities available, we came up with GoPro Quik and GoPro Studio for GoPro video editing. You can see an overview of GoPro Studio vs. Quik in this article and compare both the software easily with the comparison given below. For further facility and ease of use, we have also suggested the best alternative to it and even GoPro Quik.
Quik App for Desktop
You might be familiar with GoPro’s Quik App for iPhone and Android, and now they’ve come out with a desktop version. Quik App for Desktop works on a Mac or PC, and it’s a free download.
Basically what it does, is allows you to import your GoPro clips, select your favorite clips using a “Hilight” tag, and then it edits your video for you–including adding music. It’s pretty neat, and, as the name suggests, the process is pretty quick.
Pros for Quik App
As quick and easy as it is, there are a few drawbacks. But first, let me say: this is awesome and perfect for any first time GoPro video editors. It’s SO easy to become frustrated and overwhelmed with video editing software, so for those who are new to it, it’s awesome. Just get your footage off your memory card, and out there into a watchable, shareable video. Done.
Cons for Quik App
You can only use GoPro content in the Quik App – you can’t import footage from your phone or DSLR and edit within Quik App for Desktop. Not a big deal, after all… this is a GoPro app. Of course, they want you it to be utilized with GoPro content!
You have 10 songs available to you for free and have to enroll in GoPro Plus in order to access their additional song library. Also, you can’t import your own music to use.
You are also limited to the number of Hilights you can make. For a 30 second video, you can only tag 10 Hilights.
There are more details and “how to’s” in this video that goes along with the blog post. Leave me any questions or comments below!
Are you tired of sitting in front of the computer for hours while editing your family video? GoPro has just released their new piece of software Quik (desktop) which reduces the time of post-processing to minimum and edits a video almost automatically. In this post, I am going to show you how to use it in detailed step by step tutorial.
Unfortunately, I discovered copyright issues which make this application practically useless for some users. Read before you install it.
What is Quik
Application Quik isn’t actually brand new. It existed before but only in a mobile version.
The desktop version of Quik allows you to import your raw video footage from camera directly to the application. Then you simply select your HiLight moments. Quik will automatically make the cuts and add them to the timeline. There is some limited control – you can shuffle or remove cuts.
You MUST choose from 10 music tracks offered in the program and face potential copyright issues. If you don’t care about the tutorial and want just this information, jump right here.
Quik allows to share directly to Facebook or YouTube. That’s it, pretty easy.
Let’s review step by step how to work with Quik. You can watch this video tutorial first:
Import Files
If you plug the camera to your computer and launch Quik application it will allow you to import your files. Or you can add them from any folder in your computer by clicking ADD MEDIA at top left corner.
You can also update your camera here.
Select the raw video files which you want to use in your home video. By holding Shift button and click you can select all files. Or hold Ctrl and click only on a few files.
Create Mode
Then open selected video files in a create mode. /prevent-apps-from-opening-mac.html.
Choose HiLights
On the left side, your selected files appear. When you hover over them from left to right and back it shows you a preview of the video on the right side. Choose the best HiLights by clicking on the file on the left side at the desired moment. A blue dot appears and program automatically creates cut and adds it to the timeline below.
Besides the blue dots, you might see also yellow dots on the video clips. These are HiLights chosen earlier and they are not important in this process. They are just showing you interesting moments which you have already selected, that’s it.
Adjust Length of the Clip
Quik lets you choose up to 10 HiLights. If you want more, you need to adjust the length of the clip (default is 30 seconds).
Program offers only these 3 options:
- 15 seconds
- 30 seconds
- 60 seconds
After I chose the longest clip I was able to add more HiLights (up to 20).

Anyway, only 60 seconds video? This is pretty strict limitation for those who want to share more with the world…
Shuffle or Delete the Cuts
At the end, you can do some final touches. You can delete the cut by clicking the icon at the top right corner of the clip in the timeline.
You can also shuffle the cuts. Just drag the clip to the desired place in the timeline.
Music – Copyright Issues
Application tries to sync the music with the video. I am not sure if I can see it but check my result in the video tutorial, maybe you can.
Quik Video App Download
Quik application enforces you to use only music offered by the program itself. You can choose from only 10 music tracks by clicking at the bottom left corner.
The first issue is that you cannot add your own track outside Quik application. You can’t even choose NOT to use any music at all. This is a serious limitation. I liked only one track from those 10. To have more music you would need to sign up for GoPro’s paid subscription service called Plus.
But I discovered a bigger issue with Quik’s “mandatory” music after I uploaded my video on YouTube.
YouTube sent me an email stating:
A copyright owner using Content ID claimed some material in your video.

I thought the music in Quik could be used freely. Apparently not…
Email also announces:
There are ads running on your video with the revenue going to the copyright owner
Which means that Quik application is practically useless for people uploading their videos to YouTube and monetizing them. You will not get any revenue from your videos when using Quik.

This email also says:
Don’t worry. You’re not in trouble and your account standing is not affected by this… If there are no problems, you don’t need to take any action. You don’t need to delete your video.
But email doesn’t specify if there is any problem or will be in the future. And what kind of problem? So does it mean that the copyright owner can decide to remove my video anytime in the future? I have no idea…
I wrote to GoPro support. I still cannot believe this is not just some bug in the program. Not allowing to add your own music and then sending the revenue from your videos to a third party seems pretty harsh. So far I received only this reply from GoPro support:
What I would suggest is for you is to double-check on the copyright policy on Youtube to ensure that everything would agree on their terms. If not, please try to dispute your claim for the copyright… For the music on Quik, it is free of use as it is part of the software of GoPro.
At the same time, I submitted a dispute at YouTube. They replied they forwarded it to the copyright owner and we must wait for his reply.
It took more than a month – I haven’t heard from the owner of copyright but from YouTube:
Your dispute wasn’t reviewed within 30 days, so the copyright claim on your YouTube video has now been released.
So now I am finally allowed to monetize my video on YouTube. However, the revenue from the first month, when it gets the highest exposure, is gone. In my case it doesn’t matter, but I can imagine that it might matter to people who are highly successful at YouTube because they would lose much more money.
When your video is finished you can preview it or click SAVE at the bottom right corner. Then Quik offers to share your newly created video directly on Facebook or Youtube.
Is It Worth It?
You might have already seen the final result at the end of our video tutorial. Not bad at all when considering no control over the cuts. Plus, editing time was less than 10 minutes which is great.
Let’s summarize the whole experience with Quik desktop application. I appreciate that this software does some steps automatically and that it allows editing video very quickly. But I don’t think that editing this particular video would take me much longer in GoPro Studio. Maybe twice as much time because I would do more precise cuts and some color corrections of each cut.
Not having control over the cuts sometimes causes that there remain parts which I would normally cut away. But it is expected because the program does this automatically and cannot recognize what looks good and what doesn’t.
Quik Desktop App Mac Pro
Quik would be good enough for first-time users and those who don’t want to spent time by editing their videos.
But the fact that the video cannot exceed 60 seconds and that we are enforced to use only limited number of music tracks which are copyrighted makes this application for many people practically useless.
What do you think? Have you tried it yet? Please let us know in comments below.
