What are startup items?

Click Pop-up Windows on the left sidebar. In here you can see the “currently open websites”. You can adjust your settings for these individual websites. If you want to block popups, find the “When visiting other websites” option (bottom of the window). There are two options to block: Block and Block and Notify. Adobe Bridge 2020. Startup items, or login items, are services and applications that launch every time you start your Mac. These are applications that sneak into startup items without notice, never asking if you need or want them there. This way you may end up with a dozen apps launching as soon as you turn on your Mac, weighing heavily on its processor and memory capacities and slowing it down. Such items can increase your Mac’s startup time and decrease its performance.

Plus, sometimes when you remove an application or a service, it leaves a login item with a broken link. These broken login items are completely useless, cause unwanted messages, and waste your Mac's resources (because they look for non-existent applications). Whether you're running macOS Catalina or El Capitan, or earlier — it's all the same, so just read on.

You can search the Mac App Store for a third-party app to help you block websites, but one recommendation is an app called 1Focus. This is a perfect app for those situations where you want to make sure your mind and your eyes are focused on your work and not hitting up a social media or gaming website. The only way to disable blocking, once you set the timer, is to reinstall macOS entirely (which would delete all of your apps, settings, and documents). It is truly the nuclear option for blocking distractions—none of the other apps on this list come close to this level of permanence.

So, let's go over how to take control of login items, and how to get rid of unwanted, broken or hidden startup items.

How to disable startup programs?

Do you want to stop programs from running at startup? There’s an easy way to remove programs from startup and get your Mac to load faster on launch. The fastest way to turn off startup items on Mac is an app like CleanMyMac X.

  1. Download CleanMyMac for free.
  2. Launch the app.
  3. Open Optimization tab.
  4. Click on Login items.
  5. From the list of apps, disable the ones you don’t need on startup.
  6. Done!

How to change startup programs manually?

Disabling Mac startup programs is possible manually. Therefore, if you have some time and would like to do it yourself, follow the steps below.

Your login items are listed in settings. One of the easiest ways to control startup items is inside System Preferences > Users & Groups.

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Go to Users & Groups.
  3. Choose your nickname on the left.
  4. Choose Login items tab.
  5. Check startup programs you want to remove.
  6. Press the “–” sign below.
  7. You’re done.
  8. If you need to add an item back, press “+” and choose the app you’d like add.
  9. Then restart your Mac to see the changes.

How to fix broken startup items?

Broken Mac startup files are left there because some part of apps are left on your Mac long after you’ve moved the app to the Trash. To get rid of these parts and to fix your startup, you’re going to need CleanMyMac again. First, you need to check if they’re among startup items and disable them if so. You can do it following the instructions above. Then you need to remove app leftovers. CleanMyMac works fine on macOS High Sierra and earlier OS.

  1. Launch CleanMyMac.
  2. Choose Uninstaller tab.
  3. Scroll through the list of apps.
  4. If you spot any app that you’ve deleted, check them.
  5. Delete the app leftovers you’ve chosen.

You can also find and remove broken login items with the help of System Junk module:

Mac Disable App Blocking Opening

  2. Click Scan.
  3. Review details and click Clean.

Finally, you need to clean your macOS startup items through launch services:

  1. Open Maintenance tab.
  2. Choose Rebuild Launch Services.
  3. Hit Run.
  4. Done.

Once you do it, all broken app data on your Mac will be fixed.

Remove daemons and agents from startup process

If speaking of files, first go to the system folder /Library/StartUpItems. Here you’ll find all the startup files that are being launched with the system. You can delete the login item you think is necessary if you’re totally sure what you are doing.

Also, the /Library/LaunchDaemons folder contains a bunch of preference files that define how the application that is being launched along with the system should work. You might want to delete some of these files as well if you know you don’t need them and removing them is safe.

The /Library/LaunchAgents contains preference files responsible for the apps that launch during the login process (not the startup).

The above-mentioned folders contain app-related files. However, you can also check system folders to review whether you need some of the system applications to be running on startup:

  1. /System/Library/LaunchDaemons - note that besides preference files this folder contains other important system items that are recommended to keep untouched.
  2. /System/Library/LaunchAgents - most probably, you won’t also find anything worth removing in this folder, however, keeping this location in mind might help you find files related to a problematic app that causes troubles on Mac startup. If you have a problematic application that messes about on login, you can try to trace it back from this folder.

But, if you’re looking for simple ways to remove login items, we suggest using a professional Mac utility. Download CleanMyMac X for free and make unwanted and broken login items a thing of the past.

Content blocking is a method for blocking content websites try to download to your computer or mobile device. Apple introduced it to Safari in iOS 9 and OS X 10.11 (El Capitan). Learn more about content blocking in this explainer from iMore.com.

This article applies only to our legacy Safari extension, not to our Mac app. Safari content blocking is built into the AdBlock for Safari Mac app. You will not see it in AdBlock's options and and it cannot be turned off. Learn more about what else is different between the AdBlock extension and the AdBlock Mac app.

'Safari Content Blocking' is a setting in the AdBlock for Safari extension (again, not the Mac app) that tells AdBlock to use this method rather than the old way of blocking ads. With Safari content blocking on, more ads are blocked (goodbye, ads in Flash videos and games) and Safari runs faster.
There are some things to keep in mind:
  1. With content blocking on, you can't support websites you love by allowing their ads to appear or whitelist YouTube channels to support your favorite YouTubers.
  2. You have to pause and unpause AdBlock through Safari's extension preferences, instead of using the AdBlock button on the extensions toolbar. That is, to pause or resume AdBlock, uncheck or select Enable AdBlock in Safari > Preferences > Extensions.
  3. You can only have 50,000 filter rules in use at one time.
You might be thinking, '50,000 filters, so what? That’s plenty!' Well, not really. Some of the filter lists contain tens of thousands of filter rules! For instance, if you have AdBlock Custom, EasyList, and one or two optional lists turned on, you might have to turn one of them off before you can add a language-specific list. If you see the following error message with Safari Content Blocking on, it means that you have subscribed to too many filter lists: The number of filter list rules exceeds the 50,000 limit, and has been automatically reduced. Please unsubscribe from some filter lists or disable Safari Content Blocking!

Disable Ad Blocking

So, summing up, how do you know whether to use Safari content blocking or turn it off? It depends on what's most important to you.

Turn Safari content blocking ON if:

  • Do you want to block ads in Flash videos and games on any site? Turn content blocking ON. (With content blocking OFF, AdBlock can only block ads in Flash videos on YouTube.com.)
  • Do you want to make pages load as fast as possible? Turn content blocking ON.
Turn Safari content blocking OFF if:
  • Do you want to support websites you love by whitelisting their ads? Turn content blocking OFF.
  • Do you need to use several filter lists at the same time? Turn content blocking OFF.

How to turn content blocking on and off

  • On your Mac, turn content blocking on and off in AdBlock's options, on the 'GENERAL' tab.
  • On your iPhone or iPad, it's in Settings > Safari > Content Blockers.

Content blocking gives developers a new way to write Safari extensions that block ads. In our case, it allowed us to rewrite AdBlock to make browsing in Safari faster and to block more ads than ever before.

Before content blocking came along, the rules that determine what should be blocked and hidden were written in JavaScript, an interpreted language. With content blocking, those rules are converted to compiled code. In general, JavaScript extensions are slower than compiled code. (StackExchange has a nice explanation of the difference between compiled and interpreted languages for those of you in need of some serious geek cred.)

AdBlock blocks more stuff

Before content blocking, we weren’t able to block ads in Flash videos and games unless they were on YouTube.com. With content blocking, now we can. (“You’re welcome.” — Apple) That means you no longer need to sit through ads before your video starts or switch to Chrome to watch videos without ads.

Now, the downside

While content blocking allows us to do some things we weren't able to before, it also removes some functionality you may be used to.

  • You can’t whitelist (allow ads to show on) individual pages or domains. That means that if you turn on content blocking, we'll automatically turn off the Acceptable Ads filter list, which whitelists thousands of websites.
  • You can’t whitelist specific YouTube channels.
  • You can’t turn off whitelisted filters in a filter list.
  • You have to enable and disable AdBlock through Safari’s extension preferences rather than on the AdBlock button.
  • You can only have up to 50,000 filter rules in use at the same time.
  • Not all filters are compatible with content blocking. That means some custom filters may not work properly with content blocking on.
  • Power users who write lots of custom whitelist filters may find that some of them don’t work. In that case, they’ll need to turn off content blocking and restart their browser to use the old API. Note, however, that this workaround won’t be available forever, since Apple will likely revoke all access to the old API at some point.
